Types of Braces

At Twohig Orthodontics, when we discuss braces, we typically refer to traditional braces, which are made of brackets and wires attached to the teeth. We may recommend these types of dental braces for various reasons, including treating severe orthodontic issues, ensuring treatment compliance, providing patient convenience, or addressing patient preference.

Other systems that are often referred to as “braces” include clear aligners such as Spark™ Clear Aligners and Invisalign®. We also offer these orthodontic aligners for patients who prefer a system of removable trays for correction. You can learn more about these options on their respective pages.

Damon™ Self-Litigating Braces

Dr. Twohig has carefully evaluated many orthodontic treatment options and chosen Damon™ Braces, an advanced self-ligating braces system designed to deliver exceptional results. Unlike traditional braces, Damon braces do not rely on elastic ties to hold the wire in place, which can make treatment more comfortable and convenient for both teens and adults.

For patients who enjoy adding a little personality to their smile during treatment, we can also place colorful elastics to make braces more fun—especially for kids and teens. Choosing colors is completely optional and always the patient’s choice.

Damon braces use a built-in clip on the tooth brackets to secure the arch wire in place, eliminating the need for elastic bands. It is a “self-ligating” system that reduces friction, letting the shape-memory arch wire slide and exert continuous, light pressure for effective and comfortable tooth movement. Advantages of the Damon system include:

• Lighter forces for a more comfortable experience
• Often shorter treatment times
• Easier to clean around brackets
• Fewer office visits
• No more expensive than traditional braces with elastics

You can choose from two options with Damon Braces:

• • Damon Metal Braces: These closely resemble traditional braces in appearance, but without the hassle of elastics. They are strong, effective, and efficient at correcting even the most severe orthodontic problems.
  • Damon Clear Braces: These function similarly to Damon metal braces, but utilize ceramic brackets for a more discreet appearance. These cost a bit more due to the use of ceramic brackets for a discreet appearance, but work as effectively as metal braces.

How to Know If You Need Dental Braces

Sometimes you can look in the mirror and know you need braces, but the signs are not always so clear. Many people have had dental issues for years that they are unaware can be corrected with braces. Here are some indications that you may need them:

• You have an overbite or underbite
• You hear clicking or grinding when you open and close your mouth
• Your teeth are crowded or overlapping
• You frequently bite your tongue or cut your lip on your teeth
• Your teeth do not meet properly
• There are gaps between your teeth
• You have difficulty chewing

Our Process

1. Getting Started: First, we take detailed pictures, X-rays, and impressions of your teeth to understand exactly how they’re positioned and what needs to be changed.
2. Placing the Braces: The Damon brackets are gently attached to your teeth, and a thin wire is placed through them. Unlike traditional braces, there aren’t elastic ties holding the wire, so everything looks a little cleaner and feels smoother.
3. Adjustments Over Time: Since the Damon system allows the wire to slide, your teeth move gradually and naturally. You’ll still come in for checkups, but usually not as often as with regular braces since we don’t need to tighten them the same way.
4. Comfort and Results: Most patients report feeling less pressure and discomfort compared to traditional braces. Treatment time can also be shorter, depending on your case, and the braces are designed to be less noticeable.
