Oral Hygiene Questions:
Q1: How should I brush my teeth with braces?
Answer: Brush gently but thoroughly around each bracket using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to reach above and below each bracket, spending at least 2-3 minutes. Don’t forget your gums and tongue!
Q2: Do I need to floss even if it’s hard with braces?
Answer: Absolutely! Use floss threaders or orthodontic floss picks daily to clean between your teeth and around brackets. This prevents gum disease, cavities, and staining.
Q3: How often should I see my dentist during orthodontic treatment?
Answer: Visit your dentist every six months (or as recommended) for a thorough cleaning and check-up. Orthodontic visits don’t replace regular dental exams.
Retainer Instructions:

Q4: How often should I wear my retainer after braces?
Answer: Initially, wear your retainer full-time (day and night) for the first 3–6 months, except during meals and brushing. Later, your orthodontist may instruct you to switch to nighttime wear only. Always follow your specific instructions.
Q5: How do I keep my retainer clean?
Answer: Gently brush your retainer daily with a toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner (not toothpaste). Avoid hot water as it can distort your retainer.
Q6: What if my retainer breaks or is lost?
Answer: Contact our office immediately to schedule a replacement. Delay can cause teeth to shift back to their original position.
Shellplate (Removable Appliance) Instructions:
Q7: How long should I wear my shellplate appliance each day?
Answer: Wear your shellplate appliance exactly as instructed, typically 20–22 hours per day. Remove it only for eating, brushing, sports, or as directed by your orthodontist.
Q8: How do I clean my shellplate?
Answer: Clean your shellplate appliance every day with a toothbrush, cool water, and mild soap. Avoid toothpaste and hot water, which can damage the appliance.
Q9: What if my shellplate feels uncomfortable or painful?
Answer: Some initial discomfort is normal. If pain persists, contact our office right away to schedule an adjustment.
Elastics (Rubber Bands) Instructions:
Q10: Why do I need to wear elastics (rubber bands)?
Answer: Elastics help correct your bite and align your teeth properly. Wearing them consistently as instructed shortens your treatment time and ensures the best possible results.
Q11: How often should I wear my elastics?
Answer: Wear elastics exactly as instructed, typically 20–22 hours each day. You can remove them only during meals and oral hygiene routines unless otherwise instructed.
Q12: How often should I change my elastics?
Answer: Replace elastics daily, or sooner if they break, become loose, or lose their elasticity. Carry extra elastics with you in case you need replacements throughout the day.
Q13: What happens if I forget to wear my elastics?
Answer: Not wearing elastics as instructed can prolong your treatment time significantly. Make wearing elastics part of your daily routine to achieve your desired results promptly.
Q14: What if I run out of elastics?
Answer: Contact our office immediately if you’re running low. We can arrange for you to pick up additional elastics or mail them directly to you.
General Orthodontic Treatment Questions:
Q15: How long will I need to wear braces?
Answer: Treatment time varies but usually ranges from 18–24 months. Consistent cooperation (good hygiene, following instructions) helps you finish on schedule or even faster!
Q16: Can I still play sports or instruments with braces?
Answer: Definitely! For sports, always wear a protective orthodontic mouthguard. Musicians typically adjust quickly; orthodontic wax can help ease discomfort initially.
Q17: What foods should I avoid with braces?
Answer: Avoid sticky, chewy, crunchy, or hard foods, such as popcorn, nuts, caramel, hard candies, ice cubes, and raw carrots or apples unless cut into small pieces.
Emergencies or Concerns:

Q18: What do I do if a bracket or wire breaks?
Answer: If a bracket or wire breaks, contact our office immediately for instructions. Use orthodontic wax or gently push the wire away from sensitive areas until your appointment.
Q19: What if my teeth feel loose during treatment?
Answer: Slight tooth mobility is normal during orthodontics, as teeth are shifting into position. However, if a tooth feels extremely loose or painful, contact our office promptly.
